'Shakers Re-stirred'
-Upstairs at the Gatehouse

reviewed by Emma John

"Welcome to Shakers, a cocktail bar where happy hour lasts three, and isn’t particularly happy either. Instantly recognisable as the female counterpart to John Godber’s Bouncers, Shakers is a cross-section of an evening in which four waitresses have to serve a succession of nightmare customers.

Rose Lewenstein, making her directing debut at 19, tackles it with plenty of verve and pace, which is crucial since the plot never really moves. Susie Anton, Marianne Permaul, Helen Weaver and Becky Wright, playing the customers as well as the waitresses, throw themselves at the myriad characters, and Madeleine Wilson has created a fantastic set in which the bottles are a Quentin-Blake-style illustration behind a niftily-lit bar."
